Fresh from the rampant success of ‘Like An Animal’ – the sultry 9-minute beast unleashed upon us last autumn via one of the capital’s most cherished independents, Tough Love – idiosyncratic London types CYMBALS return with ‘The Natural World’.
As with their previous single, ‘The Natural World’ was recorded and produced by Dreamtrak (aka Oli Horton), filtered through the dancefloor sheen Horton is becoming known for, and then mixed by Daniel Rejmer – the dab hand behind both Foals’ Total Life Forever and Everything Everything’s Man Alive. Their respective talents aside, the result is quintessentially CYMBALS – a spangly gem torn from Little Dragon’s ‘Ritual Union’ and refracted through the mist of one of those wintry twilights that descend upon a deserted East End nightly.
Formed from bits and pieces of other bands, Dan, Jack, Neil and Luke have found something of a profound artistic affinity in the freeform approach they’ve collectively adopted as CYMBALS. If you’re hearing various parts of turn-of-the-century French disco, Sheffield Steel City new romanticism and a kind of new wave freewheeling, then you’ve a firm handle on the band’s MO. CYMBALS are a creature of contrast, at once introspective and then, suddenly, extrovert, melding together the synthetic sounds of the dancefloor with the innately organic sound of a ‘Real Band’.
‘The Natural World’ will be available to buy from Wednesday 23rd January. Artwork comes from Liberty designer, Robin Hulme.
